Burn a cd

Tried to transfer a file onto a cd using windows media player but a error message pops up and says the file is too big , someone told me to use Nero to do it as it shrinks the file for you .
I have got Nero 7 but cannot see how to do it?

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

How large is the file. Typically a cd will only hold about 650/700 MB.Wheras a DVD will hold 4.7GB.

Nero will not shrink a file
If you've got too much data to fit on the media the burner can't make it fit. You need compression software or more appropriate media.

What size is the file? What type of file is it - data, audio, video?

CDs can store up to 700Mb, DVD up to 4.7Mb. A dual-layer DVD can store up to 8Gb.

What do you want to do?

The file is 697mb and i've tried to use a CD-R 700mb disc and also a DVD+RW (DVD REWRITABLE/DVD REINSCRIPTABLE) 4.7GB disc , it not work on either.

Its a film by the way
It's probably too big for a CD but should fit on a new blank DVD. Nero gives you various options to copy to CD or DVD formats and it'll handle the initialisation of the disc.

The Nero website has support and downloads for your version of software. Have you tried a new blank disc?

The discs i mentioned are brand new ones , but not sure if they are the right sort or not ?

It's probably obvious but gotta ask. Have you got a DVD drive? There should be no problem burning your file to a new blank DVD.

You can choose whether to burn the file as data, mp3 or video.

Yes my computer has a built in dvd drive , i will get some new blank dvds and try that.

Many thanks
Is it by any chance a kvcd film file, with a bin/cue file, if so it needs to be burned to a cd. If it is, post back and I`ll explain how you do it with Nero.
Again, possibly an insulting question but is your DVD drive a reader, or (as you need) a reader/writer?

It is an AVI file which i am in the process of converting to enable to burn to a dvd , also my dvd drive i assume is a reader / writer as i know someone who has got the same PC as me and they can download and burn to discs.

I am having a go at the mo to sort it , with the help of you folks so thanks a lot and i will post up my results !!
