Confused, over MySpace, FaceBook..beginning to get scared ;-)

Man, I just don't get this, is it me or are these sites not just user unfriendly but plain evil, what's the difference between inviting someone, messaging them, do I have to request 'friendship' before I can message them?

What's with this networking area in Facebook, is this right, you can only talk to people in your 'network'? cos somehow, I can only talk to people in some town in Canada, when I actually live in Oxford.
