Modem?

I have my shiny new computer minus a modem. I want to get broadband fairly soon - I'm sure the techie in the shop said i wouldn't need to buy a modem that it would be part of the deal when I signed up for the broadband. Advice needed. She also mentioned something about the position of the computer in relation to the phone point because I was planning on getting an extension (phone)line. Help!!!! ccprincess (Sat 12:48 21/Apr/07)

Your internet service provider will provide the broadband modem.

If you use VirginMedia as the ISP the phone point is irrelevant as it does not use the phone line.

There is nothing to stop you using a wireless router - then it will not matter where it is.

If you get wireless, your computer doesn't need to be near the phone socket.

If you don't get wireless, it does need to be near the phone socket.

Unless you have cable broadband from VirginMedia - which doesn't use the phone socket at all.

They put the socket for the modem wherever you like. Mine is in the loft.

Or you can just get a phone extension lead for a few pounds - no big deal!
