"somebody is scanning your computer"

i am running sygate firewall and when i check the logs (and the same happened to a friend) it will sometimes say "somebody is scanning your computer" -is this a general message or something very serious?

It sounds as if your firewall has detected another computer trying to run a 'port scan' on your PC. This happens (frequently) to everyone connected to the internet. As long as your firewall is properly configured, there's nothing at all to worry about.

Go into your router settings and disable or turn off the setting that says
'respond to WAN ping' or similar wording
It can help make you less susceptible to hackers or some one snooping around your IP address range and may prevent the message you have received
