Right... Bear with me here.

Would trains in the early to mid nineties have made a proper train sound as they pulled away? I'm adamant that I used to go on trains with my Grandma when I was wee and they made the chug chug sound. My Dad says that's impossible!

Please tell me i'm not dreaming this up! There must have still been trains around that made proper train noises!

This is the most nonsense question i've asked on here but I need an answer! :-)

Thanks x

Unless it was a steam train, then no. Did they maybe take you on one?
Well, I went on a steam train just last summer, so I reckon it is very possible! :-)
Not generally, unless you went on a heritage train or a private line. Steam trains on main lines were phased out in 1968.

It would have just been on the normal train to Edinburgh. I swear it didn't just sound like a diesel engine! Lol!

Maybe I am going mad.....
Steam trains still exist throughout the country, and run from time to time on main lines as well as at preserved/rebuilt old lines.
They're lovely though, aren't they. We get them come here during the summer months.

Would it have to be a steam train? Was it maybe not just the wheels starting to move?

I'm clutching at straws here!
Lol. Yes you are going mad....

We still have a steam train in Loughborough...And yes they still do make proper train sounds

I suppose it was inevitable eh, MM!!! ;-)
I remember when I was little, the Brighton Belle used to come through our station - the smoke disappeared when it went under the road bridge, then came out again the other side. I remember the leather straps you used to hold the windows closed too - and sticking your head out and getting smuts :-)
No, your raving ;-)
No you're not erin... Just ignore them all ;o)
Here's just one of the main line steam companies

Haha. It's all that loud music! :))
When I was young I distinctly remember trains going "scrotum scrotum scrotum scrotum scrotum...." when they pulled to a stop.
I found out later on that this was the sound of the air-brake compressors charging up for the next stop, they don't seem to do it anymore :-(
the old track would make a clickety click sort of noise but with long welded rail the joints are further apart and you no longer get that sound.

Thanks Zac! :-) lol!

I've been on a steam train at Beamish (it is Beamish isn't it?) and it definitely wasn't a steam train I went on to Edinburgh....
Maybe I am going mad

Why did you type 'maybe' in front of that sentence?

It's fried my brain MM! Haha!

I'll have to ask my Grandma. Tomorrow though, it's past her bedtime lol!
