Sound effects, available free on internet??

Hi, I am trying to compile a number of sound effects for use in a play and have been trying to search using google. I am a complete novice and keep coming up against supposedly free sites but of course they are NOT. Do you have knowledge of any genuinely site where I can get them free?? Cheers Chris
