Recently, I have been looking at properties, in North Staffordshire, through Rightmove and Zoopla. Now, when I am on this site, the adverts for the self same properties are appearing next to the best answer section. I find that quite spooky and odd. How is that happening?

Sorry, I was sure I clicked on the 'How it Works' area
That's the power of t'internet. Don't ask me how.
holidays on mine give you one guess what i was looking at earlier today !
Its cookies, I'm not technical but it is something a firm can add and follow you about. I looked to see the price of Alpecin in botts and thats with me 24/7.

Nothing to worry about then. It just feels a bit 'invasive' I think
It's been happening for ages. Actually heard something about it on the news this morning, websites are going to be made to show that they use - tracking cookies is it??_ by the end of this month to warn you. If you repost in Technology you'll get a proper answer from a techie.

Thanks Prudie, but I don't want a technical answer really. I just wanted some reassurance that I wasn't being followed, so to speak.
Well you are really but we're all in it together! Every time I look online for shoes for example, those shoes appear in the ads on this site very soon after!
This has now been asked, and answered, on the "How it Works" topic

When I refresh a single page oon AB it contacts the following sites....

googlesyndication.com
gravatar.com
facebook.com
addthis.com
google-analytics.com
fbcdn.net
doubleclick.net
adsafeprotected.com
ctasnet.com
switchadhub.com
doubleverify.com
2mdn.net

Most of which are advertising sites, if rightmove use one of the same advertising sites then it's simply registered what you've been looking at and the advertising site then serves up appropriate ads on this site too.

It's no big deal, it's how the internet works, if you don't like it then the other option is you start to pay a subscription for sites like this instead of them making money from adverts.
Oh and rightmove contacts these sites....

google-analytics.com
scorecardresearch.com
doubleclick.net
2mdn.net
switchadhub.com
No wonder it takes so long to load.
