Anyone now of a good free programe to convert mkv files to avi. Im on windows 7.

You could Google for the FREE "Format Factory" and try that.
It doesn't list all the files it can handle but it does list the resulting files which can be produced.

MKV is a CONTAINER0 .. not a format in it's own right .. It can contain subs and other language tracks on top of the main audio track ..
So programs that change into a standalone avi work with mixed results.
