I recently had the dreaded black screen and after trying all the various alternative start
methods , safe start, normal start, last good configuration, BIOS etc, I had to do a complete system restore. My operating system is now restored to original XP ex-works
configuration and as such works fine. However I am now restoring some of my favourite
progs some of which require microsoft updates to at least SP2, only to find that microsoft stopped sending these earlier this year. Does anyone know how I might be
able to obtain this update. All help gratefully received.

It's not clear which service packs (if any) you've already got on your laptop. If you simply require SP2, it's still available as an executable file here:
http://www.softwarepa...om/windows/xpsp2.html
(I've checked that download link, and it does work).

Download service pack 3. This includes all service packs and updates prior to that. Then install other updates. If your laptop has an AMD processor please search on the net for the fix which is needed before installing service pack 3.
