Why is my laptop 'scrolling' colours?

My little laptop/notepad Samsung N120 often 'breaks up' and starts showing scrollling/broken up colours either on parts of or all over the screen. Tipping it about or a good shake fixes it for a while so I can imagine something is loose inside. It is just over a year old and out of warranty. Is it worth getting my dad (ex-navy electrician) having a look, have it looked at properly and pay costs or just buy a new little laptop (big ones are too heavy for me)? If a new one, what would you recommend?

Many thanks for any help.

it will almost certainly (in my experience) be a bad connection on the cable that connects the main board to the screen.

If your dad is confident in stripping down a laptop then he probably can repair it just by remaking some bad connections.

Well... I woudn't say he is confident, more the 'poke it and see' approach. Those nuclear subs don't run themselves!
If your Dad is going to take a look at it get him a manual for the model as there are a lot of little tricky things who have to do to dismantle them. If it is out of warranty still ring Samsung and see if they will repair it for you. I have a Samsung 226 BW monitor which just stopped working and it is 3 years old I rang them and they are sending a courier to pick it up and repair it for me free of charge . Give them a call it is worth a try before attempt to fix it yourself
