Re Dell xps m1530.
Every time I go to either turn off, hibernate or sleep my pc, it does not do this until, on average, the third attempt. The disc drive starts up, then the laptop gets very hot as it is is doing something instead of 'sleeping etc.'.
After this, all saved log-ins etc. are lost. How can i rectify this?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks tamborine, but all that does is bring up a vista menu on my sign-in page. No option on there to stop running programs.
CTRL+SHIFT+ESC on Vista

Check the programs that are running and close if necessary.
They should not run, really, if all programs closed down. It may be a process that can't be closed.
Post here what you find.
When you press... ctrl..alt...delete with Vista you get a screen that offers various choices...

Lock this computer
Switch User
Log off
Change a password...
Start Task Manager

Click on... Start task manager, and you can shut each programme down from there..
mine is XP but I would go for 'log off'

thanks all. I downloaded 8 new drivers (as recommended by dell site) and that seems to have done the trick, fingers crossed.
