windows cannot find????

When I go into any icon on my desk top a letter box panel comes up saying windows cannot find http/www whatever site you are looking for (red ball with a white cross) it says click start button and then search but nothing happens, I am connected to a wireless router and have a laptop which is working o.k. but the problem is with the desk top. can anyone help I am with McAfee security who cannot help me.

Do the icons on the desk top for programs work OK?? I mean, if you click on the icon for your E-mail program, does it open up OK?
I could be that it's only the icons for web sites that are not connecting.
If that is so then possibly your security is not letting them contact the Internet and is blocking them.
Can you check that??
