I know that student loans are paid in September, February and April, but what happens in the three months after that if you are going on to your second year, do we get paid during the summer break or does the April payment have to last until the new term?

you get a job and earn some money
Either that or you're expected to be back home being looked after by Mummy and Daddy.

danchip, very funny not, saxy_jag, I am 40 year old woman with a child, it was a serious question, not one that required sarcasm, as you can see it's a loan which has to be paid back so back off.
Student loans are paid in 3 instalments over the year. Budgeting is needed if there is no other income. In my student days summer jobs were plentiful and if we wanted a few weeks off work we could claim 'social security' over the summer but that no longer applies.
Yes, they are only loans and will need to be repaid- but only once income exceeds a certain figure (or unless the student returns toverseas and can't be traced).

Thanks factor30, I am English born and bred so won't be running anywhere, please excuse the typo in my last response I was so angry, it was a genuine question and concern for exactly that, budgeting for the Summer holidays, thanks again.
I've found it helpful to set have two accounts, one which my loan gets paid into and then one that I transfer some of each instalment in. This money is then only there for emergencies and if I don't use it between instalments it goes in my ISA for use on a trip to America after I've completed my NQT year of teaching!
Given your circumstances check with the DWP whether as a parent you can get support during the summer
Well you didn't say, so how were we to know? And for many students, what danchip and I have said is quite true - they either get jobs or go home and sponge off mum and dad for three months of the year because student loans are only expected to support them whilst they're actually at uni.

I will not back off because I've been there. I was 37 with two kids when I did it. I also had a p/t job. My partner's meagre income had to take care of the rest.
you have to budget the whole 3 payments over 12 months - i was a mature student as well and its tough doodly. the only other way you could possibly get cash is to apply to your universities hardship fund for cash - usually through student services. good luck x

Apologies for the late reply, but it seems you can claim JSA for the Summer holiday, I didn't' realise saxy_jag was being so rude, sorry it was difficult for you, but as I said I was just looking for advice not a lecture.
