disc not inserted

Hi,

After a period of about four months, my son attempted to play Football Manager 2008 and Sims 2 on our PC. Both worked fine last time, but now we get a message 'disc not inserted' or 'insert original disc not a copy'. These are both original discs and reasonably clear of surface marks. We have tried autoplay and reinserting the disc many times, but to no avail. What is the problem here?

Are other CDs / DVDs readable ? If the disk looks ok my suspicion would be on the drive (or drive leads). It's possible too finicky copy protection may get erroneously triggered if the dsk isn't 100% though.
