Missing space on D drive

I have a friends laptop at the minute sorting out a few things. For some reason when it was bought it has C & D drive allocated 69GB each . I'm planning on making C drive 120GB & the D the remainder, just for the recovery file . However I look in D which says 25GB free of 69GB .9.25GB is recovery , there's some eula. text documents & some dll files in there which take up no space . I found the shadow copy size on D as max 10.5 GB , allocated 6.6GB , used 6.3GB. From what I know & my own machine I would think there's no need for shadow copy on a recovery drive. However with the recovery partition & the shadow copy it only adds up to 15.55GB used .
My questions are , where has the rest of the space gone?
& am I OK just to resize the D drive to the remainder of the drive after making C 120GB?
