Sometimes it takes five or six attempts before my PC opens. This is the sequence:

Switch mains switch on wall to \'on\' -green light appears on monitor followed shortly by HP Message \'Attention. No signal\'
Then red replaces green. I press start button on PC - fan whirrs briefly then cuts out.

I then have to switch off the mains and start all over again, and again until it finally works.

What\'s wrong folks ? And what can I do about it ?

Try another mains cable.
Had a similar problem with my PC a few months back,a good clean out of the inside of the tower sorted it out for me. My CPU fan was quite clogged with dust and was causing overheating.

Thanks, you two. I'll try both things, but how do I get rid of the dust safely, with a sucker (vacuum) or blower ?
Use a soft non-static brush or one of those little PC and keyboard vaccuum cleaners they sell in Maples and other similar places. Be very careful you don't dislodge and cables or wires and you'll be fine

buy a can of maplins AIR DUSTER and blast it out rather then suck it out doing it by vac will not clean out the vanes behind the fan, better doing this outside so the dust blows away do all your fans (power unit as well)and motherboard etc while your at it
cost around £11 but this will do a few clean outs
