I mean that the name is not known to me.
You need to get the emails to show their 'headers',this should then give you the originating IP address,it will also enable you to report any abusive emails to the provider of the sender's account.
Yes, I agree with daffy, Charisse, although if you receive some very offensive mail, then you can always take them to the police.
Once you get the IP address, you can compare them with the IP addresses of other senders of your emails. You may find out who's sending them that way.
Unfortunately theere are ways around that.I was sent an email from ethel. It said it was from me. Ethel sent it to my legend007 @hotmail .co.uk account and it said it was from me.
Her header revealed she stayed in the middle of nowhere in england on the top of a hill.
obviously it wasnt malicious it just said see legend i told you it was easy , or words to that effect .
from ethel.

Ive also had a similar email from noway .it said it was yahhooo.ie which is eire .
but when ui tried to reply it said the email account does not exist.
dunno why.

ive also had emails from cumbernauld that say they originated from both chicago and another us city.

its not as simple as some think .
You must get massive amounts of spam to that legend007 address!
nah chuck

hotmail filters most nigerian crap

the rest of the spam is just abers

and welll
i dont mind .lol

can you explain , simply , how ethel sent that email ?or even noway ?
Legg When I sent you an email to your legend 007 address,When I sent it I just made up a reply address (noway2)
?

clear as mud

Oh thank you daffy654, I shall go have a look at that site.

The emails are mostly nonsense and more of a nuisance than offensive.

I mark them as "spam" and yet emails of the same ilk are received again!
Question Author
Yes Ice.Maiden, if they were offensive I would have no qualms about involving the police, that is good advice, thank you.

hc3461, I doubt that any of my contacts would be sending them, however that is a good tip too.

So you are saying ReallyLegend that there really is no way to tell from an IP address the whereabouts of the originator if Ethel and noway were able to manipulate their email address header and emails from cumbernuald showed up as originating from chicago and another U.S city?

So, technically you do not know that Ethel does not live atop a hill, noway does not live in Ireland or that your cumbernuald correspondent does not in fact live in the U.S.

That information is really useful ReallyLegend and for once I thank you for your input.

daffy654, thank you again for the link.

I have managed (I think) to open the message source from one of the emails received from hotmail and it can only be described as gobbledygook!

How do I interpret the details?

seem to be missing a small point here - you already know the domain(s) sending the e-mails

all the advice on headers from daf(t)fy (just me being obnoxious;) simply shows how to display header information in different readers

Normally header info can then be used to tracing a specific domain - which is not much use here .... we already now it's hotmail and google - you told us that

be very careful investigating e-mail origins unless you know exactly what you are doing - the "obvious" options could at best confirm your ID is live - at worst you could end up initiating a trojan or other malware
try a right click on the message [before you open/preview it] you should get an option - last on list - to "view message source"
Question Author
AcTheTROLL, I was interested in trying to identify the senders origin as I am being bombarded with silly emails.

So, from what you say viewing the source is useless and may be result in me receiving a virus!

I will continue to mark as spam and ignore.

It was more from a nuisance value as they are filling up my mailbox.

The sender(s) must have way too much time on their hands!

Thank you also kia cat.
AC..........i'm used to being called dafty :) In fact everytime I see legend call someone that (he does it quite often),I think he means me.lol
Charisse i know Ethel doesn't live atop the hill as on the satellite image the top of the hill has no houses on it and the nearest house is miles away ,that's obviously a cell tower mast.
I know exactly where my Cumberland correspondent stays and its certainly not in Chicago.

As for noway I'm unsure who /what/or where they are , though it may not be on this planet : o)

SO GLAD I COULD HELP
Charisse
absolutely right - hotmail and the rest are the equivalent of PAYG mobiles ... disposable and anonymous - and spoofing adds to the complications

that's not to say they can't be traced ... just not bu we mortals - you'd have to have the cooperation of either the police or the e-mail provider.

spam is best ignored.

daf ;0

legend - speaking of ethel - has anyone heard from the old crone recently? - last I remember seeing was early january.
