No free space on DVD No used space

When I place a dvd-rw disc in the drive I am unable to copy to it.
When checking properties box it shows no free space and no used space.
Have been trying to find the problem for two weeks without success.
I am able to copy to my flash drive without any difficulty.
Help woud be very much appreciated.

obvious first question - is the drive a writer?

which windows
are they new dvd-rw discs - or do they already contain data
can you write to cd-r/dvd +-r
what software are you using

laptop or desktop
how many optical drives

Yes the drive is a writer and had been working very well until two weeks ago.
I am running Windows XP Home
New discs - no data
I can write to cd-r/dvd+-r
Software pre installed.
Desktop
1 optical drive

I've never heard of pre-installed ... most people use nero or whatever
what's the software actually called?
it's not the built in windows option is it?

how old is the drive?

have you wrirtten a standard disc in the last two weeks?

The software is Sonic, the drive is two years old.
