Vodafone download speeds

I have been trying to use my Vodafone dongle on my Advent Netbook but the results are terrible. I have difficulty getting on line and once there everything either doesn't respond or it takes ages to do so. Far far slower than the old dial -up speeds. So much so I give up . I have tried to ring Vodafone help line but after being kept on hold for 50 minutes I gave up on that as well. I tried connecting to the web at midnight when the system would be less crowded and it was slightly quicker but still very slow. Any suggestions will be welcome.
