virginmedia cable to another PC

trying to access internet by swapping cable modem to other PC. VM say I need new NIC. another VM employee says nothing wrong with NIC but I need to update software. No further explanation. Exasperated.

If I understand you correctly you want to disconnect one computer from the modem and then connect a different PC?
That shouldn't be a problem. But if I remember correctly, don't you have to run some software that they give you for the initial setup? Not sure.
but if they did than perhaps you should run this on your newly connected PC.

Looking at this site on Virgin media, it looks like I'm wrong. Just follow the instructions here:

I am on Virgin cable and i had to register the NIC for my new modem so it would work, but I dont think you need to register each PC you plug into the modem.

If you just move the cable from one PC to another the modem can get confused and think it is still talking to the "old" PC.

After moving the cable I think you DO need to turn off your modem and leave it off for a while (10 minutes?) and then turn it back on again.

(you can also use the ipconfig /release command to reset it if you are into that sort of thing).

If you buy a router to conect to your modem then you can have two (or more) PCs connected at the same time without having to move cables.

I have 3 PCs and one wireless laptop all using my single Virgin broadband connection by using a router.
