has my laptop started making a high-pitched "whirring" noise now & then, when I've been on it for a while . . . .

Is it about to take off ?

3 things it could be
hard disc, cd/dvd drive .... or more likely ... the cooling fan

the easiest (only?) way is to give it a good suck

id the vent - use the crevice tool ... don't blow!
