Well DVDs are digital so unlike VHS tapes there is no such thing as a "better" recording quality (all the data is held in digital format as zeros and ones so it either works or it doesn't).

However cheap DVDs will fail, and you will finish up with more costers (failed recordings) than if you buy "name" DVDs.

Verbatim for example have a good reputation.

I think it's generally noted that DVD-R is best for video and DVD+R is best for data.....although, there's not too much between them.
You'll find that some (usually a bit older) DVD recorders state that they can only record to one or another type of disks.
