System Restore

System Restore hasn't worked for ages. I turned it off several weeks ago, which deleted all previous restore points and turned it on again and made a fresh start but the problem is still there. I have Windows XP and plenty of disc space. Does anyone know how I might get it working again please or is there a program that will repair it?
