Is it possible to run the desktop via an Ethernet cable and to use a laptop with wireless using the same router? I have tried to connect the laptop using wireless to a working ethernet system but it does not recognise it. As soon as I connect the laptop using an extended ethernet cable however it does work. What is the method?

Yes, that's the idea.

Check your wireless settings on your router (using your desktop). First, try setting a strong router password (not just the admin:password type to get in), then turn off all wireless security, and see if your laptop connects. It should be able to.

Then, add WPA security to the wireless, with a strong passphrase. You'll need to enter this on your laptop, and see if it works.
