Powermax Boiler Whistle

I have been in my house for around 6 years and had my boiler serviced on a yearly basis. Over the last year the boiler has started to make a whisling nose from what seems to be the flue on the side of the house. I have a plumber friend with limited powermax experience who has removed the main burner and has serviced the fan but it still gives this god forsaken whistle. It mainly whistles when it is windy outside. I have done a test listening down the shaft of a screwdriver and it is not the fan and it seens to be coming from the burner area.
Can anyone advise on this fault before i smash the thing.

hi smudge
my son has one of these and its safe to say it does not enjoy a good reputation.i serviced his unit but i would change it if he was staying in the house but for now it is safe and working but i will notcommit a tenner for repairs if it develops problems, i would rather commit the cash on a new boiler
as for your enquiry i found out more info and a lot of abuse for these boilers through google on sites like www.DIYnot .com, a far more technical source than AB

Thanks for your answer. I intend on staying here so i agree with you and i guess my best bet is to rip the thing out and start again! Its a shame though because other than the whistle its a bloody good boiler !

smudge hi again babysitting at tha grandson today and a british gas man was next door.
all the houses in the estate have powermax boilers and he hates them with a vengence
the good news is the whistling is a common problem caused by the breaking up of the baffles.there are 7 or more inside the burner and they look like a circular curly whirly (remember them ?) about 18 ins long, i think you have to drop the sump to assist removal. my sons had a couple broken up and you need a tool that is long and thin with a claw on the end to pull them up, imagine adapting a metal coat hanger
i also got a service manual foc from baxi potterton by return post, great service
