I have Vista Home Premium. On switching on it loads up various programs, some of which I no long use. How do I stop them from beginning at switch on WITHOUT Uninstalling them as I may wish to use them in the future and have plenty of Drive space to keep them in reserve.
TIA

I don't use Vista but you should go into start-programs-startup and remove them from there. (or whatever the equivalent is).
Not every program that starts when Vista starts appears in the Startup folder.

You could install this great little program called WinPatrol. Get it free here:

http://www.winpatrol.com/

This lists all the programs that start when Windows starts and allows you to stop them loading completely, or to delay them loading until after Vista has started.

It is also a great security program to have installed. It warns you when anybody tries to install a program (maybe secretly without your knowledge) and you get a chance to say no.

It also monitors your browser and stops anyone changing your home page without your knowledge or hijacking your browser in any way.

Great program to have on your PC.

Ta!
The method used on XP does not work on Vista.
I already have WinPatrol. Never thought of using it do disable these programs.
The other link I have tried before and found that I had to do a System Restore after following the advice (probably wronlgy I am no technocrat!).
The easiest way to stop programs loading with Vista is just the same as with XP. Simply "run" msconfig "start tab" and uncheck the ones you don't want to run at start up

So where do I find 'Run' It is not visible to me unlike on XP
Question Author
Sorry, silly me, found it on Acessories. Mind the progs I do not want to Start are not mentioned in it,
If you have the original software uninstall it .... re-install should you need

far better for your system ... just in case is fine ....
but you are definitely slowing your system up by leaving them on your HDD

but try
http://www.mlin.net/files/StartupCPL_EXE.zip
.... should do the trick
