Presume you mean 'how do I format a hard disk'? If you format the hard disk you need to re-install the operating system (Windows) and the drivers for your PC (eg. Dell 123). To do that you need the approapriate system disks.

Many PCs and laptops come with their own recovery discs. These allow you to set the system back t o how it was when it left the factory.

Both these options mean you lose ALL your data , so back it up.

It might help if you explained why you think you need to format your PC.

yes am using me sons laptop at the moment and does any think else work has i only get as far as internet explorer is encountering a problem and has to shut down this happens every time i try to go on the internet can any body suggest any think
ok well first I would try running the system with a restricted startup as a service / program could be causing the freeze. To do this in XP goto - Start - Run - type'msconfig'.

On the General Tab - change to selective Startup

First you could try unchecking 'Load startup items' this will stop all the items in start tab from running.

This is also the case with the services. On the services tab you have the option to hide microsoft services only leaving third party / added services. You could manually uncheck all of these. Using this procedure you could restart you system and then start re activiation options to tell if the problem occurs then at least you know whats causing it.

To fix the problem with internet explorer I would either make sure you have upgraded to version 7 + all updates or just use another browser such as firefox.
