Antivirus provider conflict?

My main computer has Norton Antivirus for protection. A second computer, on a wireless connection, has just had AVG virus protection set up on it (its Norton antivirus having expired). Since doing so, the Outlook Express on the main computer can no longer send or receive messages, and an error code 0x800CCC0E comes up. (I've Googled this and it mentions 'It is also possible to receive this error message when you have antivirus e-mail protection or personal firewall software enabled on your computer').

Is this a coincidence, or is it likely that there is an antivirus provider conflict going on somehow and, if so, can it be rectified?

You say you have just installed AVG on a PC that had Norton on it.

My guess is that Norton is still running on that PC (it does autostart) and conflicting with AVG.

Uninstall Norton on the second computer making sure all the Norton code and directories are deleted.

However I do not see why that should give you an error on the main computer.

Thank you vhg. I should have said, I did uninstall Norton on the second computer once AVG was on. I sat and watched as all the components were removed. It was very thorough and took a while! Could something be left there, though?

This morning when I logged in, the OE on the main computer seems to be OK again - but then the second computer is turned off at the moment! I'll have to wait for it to be turned on later to see if the problem comes back.

It's not possible for your second 'puter to affect the main when switched off.

If you've not done anything to the main ....
It's probably just one of those things.

This error code means that outlook could not connect to the server - could be a thousand reasons why, check all your settings and try again. Good luck

Lots of ISPs now have a web access to e-mail accounts as well as the "old" method - try that.

Then try outlook tomorrow (that's actually today ! mmmm!!)

Thank you, you two. Well, experimentation leads me to believe that, as we suspected, the second computer has no bearing on the OE on my main PC.

Experiments have, however, revealed the following:

When I turn on the main PC and log into windows and open up OE, everything is fine. Even if I log out of OE (remaining logged in to windows), and then log in again, OE is fine.

However, if I log out of windows (but not turning off the PC), and then log in to windows again, OE does not work and I get the same error code as mentioned in my question.

If I then restart the PC, log in to windows and then open up OE, all is well again!!

I am very confused!!
