wireless connectivity problem?

I have a Toshiba Satellite pro 6000/400,and I have just fitted a wireless card so I can connect to my home network. The card works fine and picks up the network no problem.
The problem I have is with the signal strength.Even when the laptop is sitting next to the router the signal is low/very low and remains the same strength even when I go upstairs, and is patchy as to which bit of the room I can connect to.I have also compared the set up with my nephews newer laptop and his is fine with high signal strength and transfer rate. The transfer rate I manage is only about 5 mbps.
It just seems my connection is hanging on by a thread,so to speak.Any advice/solutions regarding where to go from here?

Many thanks in advance for any help.
