Which type of LAN adapter do I need?

Hi, new here, hope you can help. I'm trying to connect to the Internet via my laptop and a wireless broadband router. My laptop doesn't have the built-in drive so I need to buy an adapter. How do I find out whether the port on my laptop supports a PCI or PCMCIA adapter?

A laptop uses PCMCIA although you have the alternative of a USB adaptor also
It's not PCI: PCI is the port in larger desktop machines.

PCMCIA, or cardbus, is the one at the side about 5mm high, and about as wide as a credit card.

Or you can just get a USB dongle if you have a spare USB port, like this one:
