They probably rehearsed for weeks, but look how few cuts there are in the finished product. And all on one of RKO's Big White Sets. I think they're wonderful in black and white but Astaire grumbled that this was just because RKO never had any money.
it was the poorest of the big studios, though not at Poverty Row level. But whenever anyone told him how wonderful they looked in b/w he said he'd have loved to have colour. Personally, I don't think any of his colour films look as good.
Shame he never appeared on film with his sister Adele - they'd been huge hits on stage on Broadway and in the West End and people said she was the really talented one, but she'd quit the act to marry the son of the Duke of Devonshire, which would have been sensible if he hadn't been a drunk. They lived at Chatsworth and at Lismore Castle.
