Have you emtird your recycle bin? If not the files are all still there in case you want to restore them. run disk clean up as well.
If you right click my computer > explore > then right click C: > properties you can see the amount of free space and also use disk cleanup to get rid of some useless stuff (like the recycle bin contents).
If you use Norton Antivirus then you may have to do 2 things to empty the Recycle Bin. Empty as normal as above and also "Empty Norton Protected Files" and choose (from memory) Purge All.

Try to get TreeSize Pro (on most cover disks with magazines - or a download?). This analyses your Hard Disk and shows just what is using up the space.

Defragment your hardrive.

Your pc could be full up with internet files. Right click on the internet explorer symbol, empty the files and cookies. That might help.

Or on XP - when internet is open, goto tools, internet options, and do the same
