Ipad Mail Icon Shows More Than Actually On Board

My email icon on the opening screen shows I have 5,ooo+ emails, but when I go to actual mailboxes the real total is more like 150. Why would this be? Can I reset the figures?
I regularly delete unwanted mails so cannot understand the difference shown.

Help appreciated....

You also need to delete the emails by accessing your account using safari, PC or laptop. Also look at your email settings to see how long you can see your emails for.
