I've given in and joined the "Ring Fenced Nanny State" of Apple - I've just got so fed up with fighting the seemingly endless battle with hackers/spammers on Android and Windows that I'm prepared to pay a premium for a quiet (or at least quieter) existence.

So far it's been pretty amazing - "stuff just works" and works quickly and safely too.

One way or another I've accumulated some £20 or so of credit at the App Store (for iOS or Yosemite) - so which 'paid for' apps would people recommend?

I've paid for the full Chambers Dictionary and Chambers Thesaurus (a given for Listener Crosswording) - but everything else I've needed so far has been free. I don't really 'do' games.

More ideas please

Ahhh...so you don't fancy the Great Bustards in Wiltshire then, Dave?...x

Precisely my point, methyl.

Apple also seem to be better at not rendering 'previous generation hardware' virtually unusable by making their OS products more excessively resource hungry with each version. I've got at least two perfectly good PCs which ran like the wind on XP and Office 2000, but are effectively moribund on current Windows and Office versions.

I spent quite a while driving around the Castro Verde in Portugal, chasing nebulous sightings of Great Bustards last spring, gness.

"Bustards" was pretty much what I was calling them by the end of a long, hot afternoon :)
I'm unaware of a "mainstream anti-virus program for Apple"… I do, after using an Apple Mini-mac for 3 years, religiously install updates as soon as they announce themselves on screen… Never had a problem whereas on previous Windows OS I paid through the nose for everything Norton could provide and had more problems with Norton than I ever did with virus'...
Grooveshark for music albums and Shazam for music IDs
The daughter went to see them last year, Dave...not her most exciting birding day.....they don't do much....☺

Thanks Tambo - will add to the list.
I'm always mooching the AppStore but have only ever downloaded free ones such as:

Memory Clean: cleans caches etc.

The Unarchiver: opens RAR, Stuffit, Zip files etc.

Disc Diag: quickly cleans up unneeded files, saving HD space.

If I didn't already use Adobe CS6 I might be tempted by some of the 'creative' apps available...

I'm just starting to use Lightroom 5, snags, (came free with a recent camera) - might have a look for any useful plugins - thanks.
Not from the AppStore but the below is a speedy method for transferring files, music, photos etc. from your Android devices to your Mac:
