My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.

Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)

(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

That *** from Barcelona was here two weeks ago, i do hope he wasnt sizing the place up!!!
We have another unbearable heatwave. Ive just about managed to wash two beds!
How are you all???
Oh i posted from new phone and it hasnt shown. Garage has loaned us an Opal astra til our car is mended. I can't drive it, its longer than mine. Hija is pleased.
That *** from Barcelona was here two weeks ago hope he wasnt sizing up the island, we shall not be cowed! Hija coming home for this night so have had to clean her room. Its unbearably hot again.
Sorry i appear to be repeating myself!!!
Good evening...wasn't I here yesterday? I thought I was :) It was a lovely day anyway after an abysmal start. Same again today except annoyingly windy with downpours/sunny spells. Big time stylie hair frizz. Hope you cool down soon neti.

Sounds like a good outing shaney, I haven't been to a proper garden centre for ages. I want some daffodil bulbs, I like the paler lemon ones and narcissi Pheasant's Eye.

The terror attacks in Spain were evil, what's happening to the world?
Good day. Same old same old. Did a bit of shopping then we decided to stay at home as its too stinking hot to fo anywhere. Waited for hija last night but she finally texted me at 4.30 saying she wasnt coming, so then I stopped worrying and couldnt sleep even then!/Mr N has to take car to hwr apartment and she will drive him back. He reckons the roads are too busy and cant risk me driving this new (old) car!!

I do wish this weather would make up its mind. jno jnr announced that he was bringing his new lady friend over to lunch, for which we duly crossed our fingers, then realised this would mean he'd have to tidy his room, so changed it to a restaurant; now he's come down with a throat infection, so it's all postponed.
Oh I am pleased that jno jnr has a lady friend but sorry about the sore throat. That's how my lot started. Is this meal so that you can all meet with each other and approve. Hooe all goes well.
I have got a load of Rip van Winkle in the fridge to go in my new front garden pots. We bought them early because they often sell out. Winter pansies are going in over the top with a golden cypress in each pot.
Today had been just never ending. squally rainstorms which spook the dogs, then a neighbour with a visitor (I hope) with a screaming yappy something or other dog allowed to yell in the garden, then fireworks, then another neighbour having some kind of party with much yelling. I am feeling old and crabby tonight.
Poor woofy neighbours can be the pitts!! Have to say it is so quiet where I live and even the 10 dog surrounding me are all quiet, fingers crossed.
Hija came by and took the car, she likes it I dont..
Am of to sleep. Nite all xx

we're quite quiet here even only two blocks from the trains, they all run in cuttings and you don't hear them much. And it didn't rain today, though it tried hard to. Maybe tomorrow. jno jnr went out at 2 and hasn't been seen since so I suppose the penicillin is working.
Railways Cuttings Cheam, is it jno, that being Tony Hancocks address.
The expected red rain deluge didnt happen either. Mr N has finally put two solar lamps on the gatepost, I booked him to do it in May, so no payment now, I may go for compensation!

not quite, neti. I feel sorry for those people backing on to the lines as the tubes that go through now run all night at weekends. We have some solar lamps round the edge of tyhe garden but they're now overgrown. Apparently some people find this picturesque
ello all
Lol Jno it's causing a storm in over in news. It's getting pretty crabby :)
Nice day here, bright and breezy.Hope you're all ok.
Lovely that Jno jnr has a new lady friend .I wish him happiness.
Shaney is that you and Lottie causing havoc??
We are having a very low key Sunday, nipped out for a beer and a chese and ham toasted french stick, that was all we could manage in this heat. So same old, same old.
My solar lamps are solo a guidance to the gate as our lane ( and thats being kind to call it that) is unlit and Rather dark.
Hello all
Lovely day ,bright and sunny ,quite warm.
Lol Neti .it's a long time time since I was in the vicinity of Cromer and Sheringham. Looking at the local news it seems as if it was travellers causing aggro in the local eateries ,pubs etc.
Hysteria over german sausages now eh.How on earth have I managed to stay alive all this time with the amount of wurst I've scoffed over the last forty odd years:)
Hope you're all ok.

ooh, damp and chilly down here in the sultry south but no riots lately.

Well, I wish jno jnr happiness too (and a home of his own), but the divorce needs sorting out first. I'm currently trying to buy a house for my sister to live in (she lost her savings in a big investment swindle a few years ago and has never quite got back on her feet), so one less family member to support would be helpful. jno jnr is probably earning more by now than I ever did but it takes a while to save for even a broom cupboard in London, so I expect we'll be housing him for some time yet.
Good day. Yes I like wurst and I dont believe all this wally! Mind you I had the runs all night and today which may be blamed on thr amount of fruit Ive been eating lately. Had a blood test this morning then back to bed.
Oh goodness jno thats good of you..
Oh what a lot of worry for you Jno.Let's hope he comes out with some dosh from the divorce so he's got something for a deposit .
London is so expensive now and commuting is probably no good either as the fares are going up again.

Update on Cromer .They interviewed some local business people and they said it was awful.Gangs roaming about ,shoplifting and threatening people. One lady who runs a restaurant was sworn at and pushed around and got badly bruised by a group of women!
The locals say the police could have done more but didn't.They wheeled out the deputy chief constable for an interview but he just waffled.Local people are rightly miffed about it all.
