Why not try OpenOffice? It's free and it will open Word docs and you can create new ones as well.

Hi I downloaded this for free from Microsoft I have windows 7.
Also try LibreOffice, it will read & save .docx files (which I don't think OpenOffce will):

Also free and legit.
Kendra20, what have you downloaded? Not sure if you are referring to OpenOffice or a free copy of Office 2007.
If using Open Office and you are sending your files to others, remember to save them in Word format - Open Office has its own format, but easily saves to Word.

Ideally save anything your are sending to others, that they only need to read, as a PDF. I always upload files to my works website in both Word and PDF to allow for those without or with earlier versions of Word a means to read the files.
You can download Libre Office which is free and is compatible with Microsoft Office up to 2013. Another good free office program which also is totally compatible with Microsoft Office is KINGSOFT OFFICE and it is free and also works with Android OS.
