Can anyone tell me if it is possible to compress a dvd small enough to e-mail. i want to record each episode of the bbc tv show 'the voice', and send it to a friend abroad who cant watch it there. wouldn't normally bother but a relative is a contestant on the show this year. If it is technically possible what would i need to do.

i don't think so myself as there's to many mb's to compress but depending on your recorder is it possible to transfer the dvd prog to an SD card they will hold vast amounts on gb's depending on it size of course, and no need to compress
and so easy to post too

thanks for the responses. i anticipated it might be problematic. i think on balance recording the series on dvds and posting them after its over might be the way to go. we have looked into subscribing to services to allow access to i-players but i dont think they would want to bother with that just for one programme thats on once a week. it would be worth it for anyone who likes to watch their favourite programmes regularly though.
You could try uploading the video file to cloud service and give the link to friends to download it. I used Mega 50Gb free storage service, takes me about 3 hours to upload 700Mb of data. Great if you want to share family videos which can't be sent via email.
I think you can convert an AVI file to smaller chunks in RAR format then reassemble at the other end. Never actually done it and to be honest it sounds like a bit of messing about, but may be worth researching? If you're recording it straight onto a DVD then that would be another matter - you'd have to convert it to AVI first I presume..
