Over- Sensitive Touch Pad

The touch pad on my Acer lap top is very, very sensitive, turning on other files as I try to move the pointer around the screen, and my touch is feather-light.

Can anything be done via the Control Panel to rectify this problem or should I use a mouse instead ?

I'm running Windows 7 Home Edition.

The answer is yes But you need to find the contol panel.
Mine on my Acer is bottom right of toolbar under the little pointer. "Synaptics Pointing Device".
