Word opening too many documents

I have three Word documents on my desk top.
When I select one of the documents, Word opens that and one of the other documents as well.
Any ideas why.

It sounds like you have jolly old windows 7 - am I right?
Probably the most irritating feature yet.
I think this is another trick by microsoft to make their products look and act like Macs - but it is just plain annoying.
If anyone knows what to do, please put me and sigma out of our torment.
