I have had a COMPAQ 2149 desktop with M/ Vista for3/4 years and during that time I have had various problems , usually after installing upgrades, and in each case i wanted to go back to before the installation by using the Restore facility but not once has it worked. No matter which restore point I chose it went through the process but ended up with the message .
#The restore process failed due to a system error.#
As a result I have had to sort it out myself which was frequently laborious .
It happened again this week and again I have got round the problem.

My reason for mentioning it now is ; have any of you had the same problem with a non functioning Restore app. when using Vista. ?

My old PC which had Vista never managed a successful system restore. It used to drive me mad but I always managed to get round whatever the problem was, much as you have done.
You need to restart the shadow copy service this is a known fault in Vista Go to the Microsoft web site to find the instructions on how to do it
