Firefox and chrome are the popular ones.

I personally use firefox, but there's not reason why you can't just try them both and see what you like, you can have as many browsers as you want installed at the same time without a problem.

Thanks to all Rick
The first part of your question ("can anyone recommend a browser" has been answered but the second part ("and why") seems to have been ignored.

As others have indicated, Firefox is the most popular browser with the 'regulars' here in AB's Technology section. (It's also the most popular browser in the world, when 'popular' is defined by active choice, rather than by what people use 'just because it's there. Chrome is in second place).

There are several reasons for using Firefox but one of the most important reasons is that it's easily customised to your own needs, through the use of 'add-ons'. The most popular add-ons among AB members include the British English Dictionary
https://addons.mozill...h-english-dictionary/
and Adblock Plus (which gets rid of the ads on pages like this one, resulting in much faster loading)
https://addons.mozill...x/addon/adblock-plus/

Hints:
(i) If you install the British dictionary, check that it's working by typing 'color colour' into an AB answer field. If 'color' is underlined in red (as being incorrect), the British dictionary is working and you don't need to do anything else. If 'colour 'is underlined, right-click on it and select 'Languages > English (United Kingdom). The dictionary will then work properly from then on.

(ii) If you install Adblock Plus you'll be invited to subscribe to a list. You MUST choose at least one subscription, otherwise Adblock Plus won't know what to block. 'EasyList' will probably meet you needs.

There are loads of other add-ons which you might want to take a look at. For example, if you want to be able to save YouTube videos to your hard drive with just a couple of clicks, this will do the job for you:
https://addons.mozill...be-video-downl-10137/

Chris
In addition, if you download and install Google Chrome, it will detect your computer's "locale" automatically and use the appropriate dictionary automatically - the spell checker is built in, so there's nothing further for you to install.

As regards blocking adverts, this is all you need: https://chrome.google...lfepjocnamgkkbiglidom

Firefox every time for me too.
I often recommend it here.
(Albags works for Mozilla)
Firefox
I like the way that Firefox is a small application, with loads of optional add ons.

IE has too many thing built in. It's just bloatware.

Bloatware, Doc.

So your browser and your undies both contain lots of stuff that you don't really want ??

=0D
Despite having used Firefox I went back to Internet Explorer but apparently according to Buenchico that doesn't count as a real choice.

Firefox has long been notorious for memory leaks that bloat its memory footprint the longer it runs. Every new version claimed to fix it.
Yes .. You're quite anti-Firefox too, like Roj ... Beso.

Yes .. my memory doubles in maybe 3 hours of use .. with maybe 3 tabs open.
Any hardship in restarting browser and automatically getting same pages reload?
I say Firefox is fantastic !!....I am surprised Doc that you still using IE...Could get you into trouble within AB... Lol.

Ron.
@ Albags

I am not anti-Firefox per se. I just call it as I see it.

However I believe it is accurate to say you are anti-IE. You conveniently disregard the flaws in Firefox while you pretend IE is hideous and incredibly vulnerable.

JoggerJane pretends that IE is bloated. In fact it is quite tight and doesn't suffer from the memory leaks you have admitted have always beset Firefox. And yes I do find it inconvenient to have the computer's RAM chewed up by a program.

Whenever browser security is discussed the FireFoxophiles inevitably pipe up with their claims that Firefox is far more secure. In fact that claim is demonstrably rubbish. I find it amusing that users expect Firefox's developers to have managed security well when they cannot even manage something as basic as memory usage.
Now that I've got used to it, I'm happy to stay with IE9.
