When I opened itunes last night it had a new version so i let it download but did not reboot. Then i plugged in my iphone 3G and got another message to say there was an update for that too. So i said OK and knowing how long these things take I wandered off for a while. While I was gone someone who though they were being helpful noticed a reboot message on screen an clicked it. Unfortunately that was probably a message from the itunes update and my iphone which was in the process of being synced now doesn't work. Itunes does not recognise the phone is plugged in and all i have is a graphic of a USB to itunes on the phone. Tried resetting by pressing the power and home button but it just goes straight into telling me to plug it in. Can anyone help?

Your phone is in recovery mode, did you backup your phone first?, if so just restore from that backup and start again. I thought the IOS 5 was only for iPhone 4 but could be wrong

Let me know how you got on
have you tried doing the reset (pressing home and on/off button) whilst its plugged into itunes.

not sure if there is an update for the 3g as the ios5 is for 3gs and above.
Pressing home and on/off will only put it into recovery mode, which it is already in. The update is only for 3GS and above

Thanks all, it's been sorted now. I had to take it to the O2 shop in the end and a very helpful chap sorted it for me in half an hour and it now has the new OS. Sorry but it is actually an iphone 3GS.
