Can anyone please recommend a free and good undelete programme that I can use to find pictures that I think I have mistakenly deleted from my external hard drive.

Thanks.

Oh Wak I'm sure you are sorry that you ever answered this question?!
Thanks so much for the link you sent. I was able to open it and apparently I also unzipped it which I didn't think I knew how to do!

I clicked 'file' and then 'choose source and destination drives' which opened the next bit, however I don't seem to be able to highlight the source drive or destination drive sections. (I can click on the headings Drive, Clusters, Sectors etc but nothing happens.) Then when I click on the choose directory button it says "You must select a destination drivebefore choosing a destination directory".

Feel free to tell me to p!ss off and I surely will Wak . . . but are we nearly at a solution?!
Hi, Don't panic, we are nearly there but I know how frustrating these things can be.
When you click "choose source and destination panels", then next page opens showing two separate panels, both of which should show the different directories you have connected, i.e. C:\ H/D , possibly D:\ Disc Drive and possibly E:| external H/D, it also shows the clusters, etc of each.
I assume the external hard drive is plugged in?
In top panel, Click on the actual E:\ line which is where the wanted files are (source drive?) and leave it highlighted.
Now i bottom panel click on the C:\ line which is where you want to store the rescued files (destination drive?) and leave it highlighted,
Now click "choose directory" button which opens another panel and choose the folder in that panel where you wish to store the rescued files.
See how you go and keep in touch.

Hi Wak,

My problem is that when I click on the 'choose source and destination drives' option the box that pops up doesn't show any directories for me to click on. None at all. Both the boxes are blank .
When you click on "FILE - choose Source and Destination drives" a new panel should open with the source drives in the top panel, the destination drives in the bottom panel and the destination directory tree in the right side panel.
The S and D panels should show all the available drives like C:\, D:\ and the external drive which may be E:\.
If these drives are not showing then the FFU program can't be seeing/finding them.

Where have you downloaded the FFU files when you unzipped them???
Suggest you make a folder called UNZIP (but any name will do) on the C:\ drive. Put the FFU.zip file into this folder and unzip it there. You should finish up with 8 files together. Now double click the FFU1.exe file.
If the external drive is connected to the computer then you should see all available drives in both the top and bottom panels.
see how you go.
Question Author
It definitely isn't seeing them then Wak because nothing is showing up in those panels.
I had already downloaded the FFU file on to the C drive however only 7 files open and none are called FFU1.exe.
Which is the EXE file then??
Can you list which files you have then, shivvy?
Shivvy, Hold your horses!!!!!
I've just been trying another program for you and it seems brilliant and much easier.
go to
http://www.sharewareconnection.com/pixfix.htm

I have a file called pixfix.exe so I assume you will be asked to download that.
It's Free and rescues files up to 1Mb.
Do you want to try it tomorrow?? If you do I'll come back for your reply in the morning.

OK - i downloaded the pixfix Wak but when it says 'click on the drive you would like to scan for lost and deleted items' the only option I have to click on is the C drive. But I know that my pics were saved to the external drive.

I did the scan anyhow but the pics it threw up were mostly images from websites I have visited.

I'm losing the will to live . . . !!!
I think you must have a problem on your comp, Shivvy, as your external hard drive cannot be seen by either program you have tried. Is the external one plugged in, switched on and connected to the computer??
If you go into Windows Explorer, can you see the external H/D????
The new program, pixfix, should show you the C:\ drive, your Disc drive (D:\ ??) and the external drive, or any other drive (Memory stick?) if connected correctly.
Please check all connections and come back to me.
Question Author
I think you are right Wak - it sounds like I have a problem.

Although I can see the hard drive in windows explorer and I can open documents etc from it.

Anyhow, I have an IT friend who is coming back from holidays next week so I will get him to have a look at it. I'm sure it must be so much easier to work out when you are sitting in front of the machine.

I can't thank you enough for all your help Wak. You have been so informative and patient - and I really do appreciate it.
Thanks again,

Shivvy
Thanks for the quick reply. When you can see the external drive in W.E., what is the directory letter?? Has it got a directory of it's own or is it showing as part of the C:\ directory.
Yes, it is a lot easier to sort things out when you can sit at the comp.
Hope your friend can sort it for you but come back if I can help further.
I'm sure the Pixfix will sort out your problem of the deleted photos.
Cheers.
Wak
I've just realised that Pixfix is the same program that Buenchico suggested earlier but I didn't open the link.
My apologies, Chris.
Wak.

Not sure whether you will get this update Wak, but I thought you deserved it!

Apparently the external drive has a 'trashbox' where anything that is deleted from it is stored. I didn't know it existed until the IT guy showed it to me.

He opened it up, and there the pics were!

Thanks again for all your help Wak.
