vista install prob

i had to reinstall vista home premium on my dektop i did a complete format.the problem is although it restarted several times all seemed fine except when i tried to shut down it would`nt work,so i switched off using the on/off button.when i switched on again although it ran through the start up checks before it got to the welcome screen the screen went black and that was as far as it got. after a couple of times trying to start i tried to reinstall vista again, but after the initial windows file check the screen again went black and stayed that way.i never touched any settings at all so am at a loss as too what the problem is, and as i can`t seem to get it to boot from thie disc now either, have no desktop.any help gratefully received, many thanks in advance

I presume you over-installed it?
Format the drive fully first, and reload Vista again.
Unplug all non-essential hardware (especially USB devices) until after the install and updates.
