there was only one defender between the mexican player and the goalline when he got the ball- the goalie was further out
It was offside.
<A player is in an offside position if he is in his opponents' half of the field and is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the next to last opponent.>

I don't think I've ever seen that happen before. I always assumed that the keeper wasn't part of that scenario and that a defender would play you onside regardless of the goalkeeper's position. Thanks for the update.

The Mexican "scorer" was in a clear offside position at the relevant moment that the ball was played towards him. The replay clearly showed that to be the case.

All I read then was 'blah blah blah blah blah blah' lol. I watched the game it was offside thats all that mattered :-)

Having watched that replay posted by ABerrant I don't think he was offside. When that ball was headed forward the keeper was behind the ball, or at least level and so was the defender. Therefore it's on side.

beejay, when that ball was played forward the goalie was playing the striker on, it doesn't matter when the forward touches the ball, it's when the ball is played forward and the keeper is clearly behind it then.
styley-it does matter when the forward touched the ball-that is the moment that counts

Question Author
No way man, it's when it was played forward that counts.

A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or *is played by one of his team*, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:
•interfering with play
•interfering with an opponent
•gaining an advantage by being in that position

Question Author
I've seen loads of games and it's always looked at from the ball being played forward. I am definitely watching the highlights.
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
•a goal kick
•a throw-in
•a corner kick
---
the ball played forward was none of the above either
Anyone trying to make out that it was onside needs their eyes testing. All I would say is freeze the picture at the moment the Mexican heads the ball and his mate is at least 2 yards offside.
styley-will the highlights be different to ABerrants link ^ ?
It was definitely offside, the scorer was beyond the last but one defender (in this case the keeper) when the ball was headed forward.
This is one of those times when people just don't know and understand the rules properly.
And it has happened before but can't remember which teams were involved, but I had a big argument with my mate... he said it wasn't offside and I took great pleasure in proving him wrong (I had to print off the laws of the game to do this). How smug I felt that day!!!

I stand totally corrected, don't know what I was thinking there. I see it now, well a few days ago.
