Should a statue of the anti-British agitator Gandhi, be erected in the English city of Leicester?

Leicester, which is home to some 280,000 people of Indian origin, is likely to become the first British city where the native white population will be reduced to a minority by 2015.

Perhaps we will then need our own 'Gandhi' to fight for our freedom?

Put your nappy on AOG, the jobs yours.
Maybe if the British hadn't taken over his country he would have felt more kindly towards us.

Why not, London gas had one for years.
I don't really believe the achievements of Gandhi can be summed up with the phrase, anti British agitator.

He achieved his ambition by promoting non violent protest and deserves to be praised for that. He was also loved by the working class people of Britain on his visit in the 1940's.

It seems highly appropriate that he is honoured with a statue in Leicester. I'm actually surprised there are not more statues to this peaceful, decent man.
He helped the British in the Great War by organising his supporters as stretcher bearers (if memory serves).
I don't see how this impinges on your freedom, nor do I feel that Ghandhi's example is a threat to our freedoms.
Ghandhi was an integrationilst, he despised partition in society (all society), and for all your ramblings (often bizarre) it's not the Indians (prdominately Hindu) or the Sikhs who cause the troubles or threaten the freedoms you so frequently refer too.

Many ex-terrorists are now welcomed in the UK.

Nelson Mandella advocated bombs in South Africa but is now a hero wherever he goes, and we have schools and roads named after him.

We now have Irish MPs who until a few years ago were terrorists.

Yesterdays "terrorists" are todays "freedom fighters".

(Not suggesting Gandhi was a terrorist, far from it, just showing how attitudes towards people can change).

Try watching Gandhi by Richard Attenborough to see how we treated some of the people in India.
VHG in fairness to Ghandhi he was highly critical of Idian attitudes towards their own people, that's why he adopted a Dalit girl, it was also his desire to reform India into a just country with equality that led ultimately to his assination.
He wanted too much too soon, the traditional ruling castes were'nt going to give up their influence lightly.
The man was a pacifist who was an "agitator" because his country was occupied by foreigners - us! Try putting the flip flop on the other foot, aog, you'd be hailing him as a hero for speaking out against anti British oppression.

There are many statues in this country to which people could justifiably object, but this is certainly not among them.
Isn't erecting a statue of Gandhi likely to inflame British sentiments? What if we erected a statue of Enoch Powell or Nick Griffen?

Are you seriously comparing Ghandi to a couple of blatant racists? Get real!

Comment please?
>The first British city where the native white population
>will be reduced to a minority by 2015.

Whether you agree with it or not this is through our governments choice, we agreed to let the people come here.

Our occupation of India was not through the choice of the Indians (even though we did a lot of good things there).
aog:

You also need to "get real", mate. People in Leicester are there lawfully whereas India didn't exactly invite us with open arms, did it?

Or have I been fibbed to all these years?
I was born and brought up in Leicester and I can tell you that the large Asian population has never been a problem for me.
Ghandi should be in Clivedon - he did have an affair with Lady Astor. Hope he's wearing more than a dhoti ;)
AOG I think your optimistic quote saying the whites will be in the minority by 2015

"The latest nationwide census is expected to show that by 2011 Leicester will become the first UK city where 50% of the population will hail from a non-white background"
The figure of 280,000 of Indian origin is total rubbish.

The 2001 Census showed 279,921 folk lived in Leicester of whom 178,739 (63.8%) were white and 215,361 (76.9%) were born in the UK.

Just because you are not white, does not make you any less British.

TCL and that don't include the illegals. Also 92% of the children in one school in Leicester are black. Nothing to do with discrimination of course!
