Why not just punish the offender and not the whole team?

yes, I think so. It's really only a quarter of a medal (or should be), but it's presumably only gold because one of them cheated.
It is a team event. If one of the four cheated, then the whole team cheated. Tough on Bolt, but fair.
They should re-run the games
yup .he was part of the team to gain advantage through misuse of drugs
I half heard my colleague asking the question .

I thought that he Bolt , had been found to have taken a banned substance .

Imagine how big a story that would have been
Bolt would be, I imagine, the most tested athlete around, he dare not !
Apart from anything else he does not need drug boosts.
thought..they would have to catch him first in order to test him !!

If you watch the race itself, Jamaica won by a huge margin, roughly 10 metres.

The result was not in doubt and one member's failed drug test would not have affected the overall result.

I think it is harsh and look how long it has taken to reveal this. How many results can we ever trust?
Speaking generally , what would stop someone who has a gripe against another athlete , from depositing a banned substance into a person's food or drink .

'I did not knowingly take the banned substance '
Yes...if the team won by someone cheating.
a cheat is a cheat..'ems the rules !

3 members of the team were not cheats!

It's a shame that in many sports nowadays , you watch the winners on the podiums , but you can't be sure that the winners are clean .
One member was a cheat therefore the team was tainted.
Even so...they might not have won if it wasn't for the 1 cheat.

You can still contravene the rules without being labelled a 'cheat'. Did he knowingly take a banned substance? If not, he's not a cheat in my book but I accept he has broken the rules.
Question Author
Ummmm - without doubt they would have won. Watch the race on youtube.

Nesta ran first, the lead was huge after Bolt handed over to the final leg.
Team event = Team medal. One DQ'd then all DQ'd.
a team is a collective competitor...collective responsibility..collective punishment !
