Loved the little village of Ambleside and surrounding area. Had lovely trip on Lake Windemere. Going to Keswick in May on walking holiday so looking forward to that.
Not so much an area, but the views from Hardknot and Wrynose passes are stupendous on a good day. Coniston area is lovely, but I have a liking for the Cartmel area, spent lovely family holidays round there.
I liked Ambleside. I was a good "base" for travelling around.
Most everywhere really, except Windermere/Bowness and Ambleside which are now too commercialised.
Cockermouth is very nice and for something a little different go for a bracing walk along the beach at St Bees Head - as far west in the Lakes as you can go.

Have family in Carlisle who we are visiting end of the month.
Going to have 2 days in the Lakes on the way back home.
Staying in Bowness but as mentioned above, a bit busy and commercialised so treating as a base. Looking for suggestions for less touristy scenic areas. Thought you may know of some hidden gems.
Thanks in advance and to thos already posted.
My favourite would be Ullswater. Come down the east side from Pooley Bridge and there is a nice little pub in Howtown, then as you exit the valley at the southern end you start to rise up Glenridding. Where suitable park up and look down the length of the lake - quite spectacular. There is, as you'd expect some exceptional walking around there as well.

Captain - Thanks.
Coming from the North we could take that route through the Ulswater area and work our way down to the hotel.
Honister Slate mine is quite interesting and if the weather is good, apicnic on the banks of the stream that runs through Honister Pass.....
