Why do so many people cough so much in televised snooker matches?

I can go six months and not even clear my throat, but the Alexandra Palace sounds like a World War One TB ward!

Any ideas why?

I've always noticed that and wondered the same.  I thought maybe because they are mostly smokers? No idea whether they are of course.

Don't think it's anymore than anywhere else, maybe its just noticeable because it's so quiet.

It's annoying. Anyone with a persistent cough should have the decency not to attend. If they do - a keep coughing - they should be asked to leave.

Of course

Also in a quiet environment the chances are that if one person coughs it makes other feel like doing it,

"Of course" it's because it's otherwise quiet was what I meant

I have thought about it - maybe the venues are hot, or air-conditioned, or both, which may cause people who don't normally cough, to get a dry throat and mouth, and cough as a reflex action.
