I have just purchased an old H reg car.  Its only done 38k miles, with full service history.  Problem is it won't start first time.  It takes me at least 4 or 5 attempts until it starts.  Is this a minor problem?  It is petrol.  Thanks.

If it turns over OK (robustly, not sluggish), it is probably spark plugs, check and clean re-gap (or replace). Secondly you could check the condition of the points inside the distributor. Thirdly make sure your air filter element is clean.
